Electromagnetic pulses will defeat glioblastoma
Standard treatment, doctors remind, is surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation. A new approach using electromagnetic pulses has shown that the technology has additional positive results. Without canceling, however, the traditional method.
The essence of the new technology is irradiation of glioblastoma with electromagnetic pulses that destroy the structures of tumor cells. This approach preserves the quality of life, while causing some inconvenience - the patient must wear a multi-kilogram wave generator.
The exposure takes 18 hours a day. Doctors note that the scalp must be freed of hair in order to apply gel pads.
Scientists recalled that glioblastoma is a disease of late age. A diagnosed disease leaves the patient a couple of years to live. Approximately 13% of patients survive. The use of the new technique adds 5 months of life to patients.
General recommendations, the researchers emphasized, are still premature. The experiments covered a contingent that arrived in relatively good condition. Another nuance is that the method was tested on patients who tolerated chemotherapy well. There are new experiments ahead.
