Dizziness due to brain tumor

Dizziness caused by a tumor in the brain occurs in approximately half of people suffering from this disease.

However, they very rarely appear as the first symptom of the disease; usually patients begin to pay attention to dizziness only when the tumor that has affected the brain is already at a significant stage of development.

What is dizziness like with a brain tumor?

The nature of dizziness varies and depends on which part of the brain is affected. They are especially severe when the tumor affects the vestibular nerve, its nucleus and corresponding pathways in the following parts of the brain:

  • medulla oblongata bulb;
  • pons area;
  • Division IV of the cerebellum.

In the latter case, dizziness is most painful for the patient.

When an accumulation of malignant cells occurs in the cerebral hemispheres, dizziness occurs much less frequently and is less intense. They arise mainly when tumor tumors are localized in the frontal or temporal lobe of the hemispheres.

Dizziness with a brain tumor is very rarely permanent, although it does happen. Usually it occurs in the form of an attack and occurs with increasing force. Dizziness can be provoked, for example, by rapid nodding of the patient’s head or its rotational movements, and sometimes simply by a person’s attempt to look up.

When dizziness occurs caused by a brain tumor, it seems to a person that either everything around him is spinning around him, or he himself is spinning. The sensation of rotation is so strong that a person, if he is standing or sitting, may fall. It is often accompanied by nausea, pale skin color of the patient, a drop in his temperature and a slow pulse.

How to distinguish dizziness due to a brain tumor from dizziness caused by other causes

The risk of brain cancer can frighten any person, so when people experience dizziness, they want to find out whether they are symptoms of a developing brain tumor is understandable.

It is believed that dizziness may be associated with a tumor that has appeared in the brain if a person, in addition to the feeling that everything is spinning around, has:

  • some hearing loss, and only on one side;
  • nausea or even vomiting
  • decreased heart rate;
  • drop in blood pressure levels;
  • appearance of paleness and cold sweat on the skin;
  • headache.

The last symptom, namely the headache accompanying dizziness, is considered the most obvious sign that it is caused by a tumor formed in the brain.
