Scientists have discovered a virus that can defeat brain cancer

As it turned out, viruses such as reoviruses have the ability to resist brain tumors. The blood-brain barrier in vertebrates, the main function of which is to provide protection against microorganisms, turned out to be powerless against reoviruses.

Scientists from the University of Leeds and the Institute of Cancer Research in London have found that certain types of viruses can fight brain tumors. The study results were published in the journal Science Translational Medicine .

We are talking about reoviruses , which were able to overcome the blood-brain barrier, which protects the vertebrate brain from microorganisms.

This was discovered after an experiment involving nine patients with cancer. They were given intravenous drips containing reovirus, and then the tumors were surgically .

It turned out that the virus was able to multiply and attack cancer cells, thereby activating the immune system to fight the tumor. This is especially important because it is difficult for the body to distinguish cancer cells from healthy ones.

“The virus recognizes cancer very quickly, and immune cells, in turn, “see” infected areas and begin to fight them,” RIA Novosti quotes the study.

Scientists believe that such viral droppers can have a good effect in combination with other cancer treatment .
